I got ketoacidosis on keto (non-diabetic)
So, I have been doing keto off and on for years, and recently lost about 45 pounds doing it. I always read that ketoacidosis was something that only diabetics got.
Well, I don't know if I'm a freak or if this is really a thing, but I am not diabetic and yet I ended up with metabolic acidosis.
I had been going pretty hardcore on the diet and happened to get sick. I started throwing up and couldn't for about a day. I went to the hospital to get an IV, thinking I would be released in a few hours. Well, I ended up staying most of the week, hooked up to an IV.
The doctor said I had severe acidosis and that it couldn't have just happened overnight (which makes me think the sickness alone was not to blame - or maybe was even a result of the acidosis). He said my body was severely acidic.
They gave me potassium, fluids, sodium bicarbonate, and magnesium until I leveled out. I basically didn't/couldn't eat the entire time I was there. I don't think I've been sicker in my life. It was really bad.
Anyway, just wanted to get thoughts on this. I was a big believer in keto and truly believed this couldn't happen to a non-diabetic. I'm a little scared to get back to it.
I also got ketoacidosis while doing the keto diet in 2015. It ended up giving me pancreatitis and my diet has never been the same since. I now have chronic pancreatitis and it flares up only with high fat foods, alcohol and too much white carbs. It’s been a crazy experience, I was very rigid with the diet at the time and exercising too frequently, what landed me in the hospital was having a piece of birthday cake ♀️ and messing with my whole system. My keytone level in my blood was 10+ I don’t totally blame the Keto diet itself, but do not think people should take it lightly as it can really mess up your body if not done correctly.
